I was tricked!, 15 Jan 2006

I'm a life-long fan of Lauryn Hill, and I also appreciate the value of Tupac's lyrics, and so was looking forward to reading an indepth analysis of the lyrics of these two influential artists. I'm not religious myself, but thought it would be interesting to read a different perspective on the lyrics and the music that I love so much.Instead, what I read was not an analysis of the lyrics of these songs, nor was it really about the music at all. Instead, I found myself reading a rather simplistic and personal account of the two authors' religious views and life experiences. I am not knocking these accounts themselves, I'm sure they are of value to certain readers, but they had nothing to do with the music which the book was supposed to discuss. For example, the chapter on Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You (which Lauryn Hill simply covered, and therefore didn't even write) recounted how this song had been the first dance at one of the author's weddings, and how it reminded him that God never took His eyes off of us. No mention of the lyrics or the particular spiritual insight that the song evokes; from my point of view this chapter just simply used the title of the song to discuss one aspect of the author's religious belief. I was expecting to gain a new perspective on lyrics that I knew so well, instead I found myself reading a thinly-veiled yet well intentioned evangelical bid. I'm sure this has value for many readers, but I felt misled by the title of the book, and disappointed by it's simplistic and sometimes irrelevant content.
