About the Author

William Luis, professor of Spanish at Vanderbilt University, is the author of several works, including Culture and Customs of Cuba and Literary Bondage, Slavery in Cuban Narrative. Born and raised in New York City, he is widely regarded as a leading authority on Latin American, Caribbean, Afro-Hispanic, and Latino U.S. literatures.
