Product Description

Product Description

"If I was going into teaching now, I would want a handy, easily accessible booklet of dos and don'ts and possible strategies that I could employ. I would want it to be easy to understand and follow, and just as easy to put into practice. I would want to know that I could trust the strategies because they had been tried and tested in the most difficult of classrooms. I would also want a complete checklist of everything I needed to do before I even stepped into the classroom." The down-to-earth introduction to Roger Dunn's Dos & Don'ts of Behaviour Management sets the tone for this upbeat and practical guide for teachers. Containing advice on all aspects of behaviour management, this book covers problems such as managing 'problem' pupils and dealing with a classroom 'riot'. This book will prove essential reading for primary and secondary teachers everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ALL WOULD BE TEACHERS, 3 April 2006
I found the easy to read style and the actual situations that the author goes into a real bonus. It is obvious from the start that he not only knows what he is talking about, but that the way he describes how to resolve issues will also work. This book is everything that many of my friends on PGCE courses say they do not receive as part of that year's preparation for teaching. It has given me the confidence to actually consider teaching as a profession and I now feel that I have the tools that would help me to become a successful teacher.

What I particularly like about the book is the fact that it cuts straight to the chase. It does not bother with references to other books or research. Dunn has been around the teaching block and has the ability to put over his thoughts on how we should treat youngsters, gain their respect and ultimately become good teachers. Everything he says makes sound common sense. I found myself nodding in agreement with so much that he wrote and I have to believe that schools would be a far better place for everyone if they adopted his approaches.

The price of this book will be repaid a thousand times over and I cannot imagine for one second that even teachers of some experience would not benefit from the advice given. If you are a PGCE student, this book is an absolute must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful tips, but could do better, 8 May 2007
By Beached Whale (East Yorks, UK) - See all my reviews
Mr Dunn's book deserves praise, because it neatly encapsulates a host of useful tips and procedures to aid new teachers. However, given Mr Dunn's extensive experience and evident knowledge, I expected more. For example, his advice on the seating plan is sound and well argued, but one of the keystones of the process is the starter activity, of which he says "see next chapter". The so-called 'chapter' is actually the following section, but never mind - what is annoying is that there are no examples of a starter activity, merely that it be short and consistent with the learning outcomes. The book does not contain an index, but it is so short (I read it, without rushing, in a couple of hours) that it would have been pointless.

In sum, great advice and useful tips, but a bit thin on practical examples.
