Product Description

Product Description

The Anglican church has been no stranger to controversy over its long history but, arguably, the debates raging at the moment are among the very hottest it has known, so much so that they threaten to split the Anglican Communion. What better time, then, to ask several prominent Anglicans why they are still in the church and what they love about it? The contributors have been chosen because they represent Anglicanism in all its range and diversity, but also because they remain positive about the church and their place in it. "Despite the widely differing ages, backgrounds and perspectives of the contributors," writes the editor, Caroline Chartres, "some common themes emerge: a dislike of labels ('evangelical'/'liberal'/'charismatic' etc); an enthusiasm for the parish system and Prayer Book Evensong (whether under turning fans in the tropical heat or in Sir Christopher Wren's great masterpiece at the heart of London); an appreciation, rather than resentment, of a Church that is broad enough to contain those of opposing views. This is a personal, partial and affectionate (though by no means uncritical) glimpse of the Anglican Church, whose diversity should still - most of the time - be a cause for celebration."

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Revealing Read and Inspiring, 18 Sep 2007
By P. Worthington (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews

If you have a fascination with what makes people tick and even the slightest curiosity about the Church of England this book will be richly rewarding. From the wise and witty introduction through the fifteen interesting, honest and heartfelt speakers - I was deeply impressed by the wide-ranging thoughts and feelings that inspire them.

I read the book quickly, it's a page-turner and then I wanted to re-read it! Conclusion - this is a really excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Anglican - but not a Christian, 6 Nov 2007
By Mr. S. Loveday (Wells, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When I saw this book on a friend's bookshelf I knew at once that I had to have a copy and I was not disappointed.

The book consists of short pieces (a few pages each) from an exceedingly varied selection of people who have in common only one thing, that they value the C of E. It's hard to say what I have most enjoyed - though the self-deprecating title is a very good place to start! It has been so wonderful to meet a group of kindred spirits - people whose search for meaning goes on within the Anglican Church, but is intensely private and non-dogmatic. This book includes contributions from fervent evangelists - and from uncertain seekers; from scientists (Rupert Sheldrake) and non-scientists; from old and young. What they have in common is a readiness to accept everyone and every variety of belief or absence of belief; a recognition that what happens in church is shared, but also private; an understanding that the Church of England is not for believers, but for everyone in England. It has been a delight to come into contact with so many thoughtful, funny, and understanding writers.

What this book made me realise is where I stand in this: a churchgoer, an Anglican - but not a Christian. Where I stand, and where I belong.

5.0 out of 5 stars An example of the broadness of the Anglican church, 20 April 2009
By Tisha James (London, England) - See all my reviews

This is a delightful collection of short pieces by a broad selection of people who may have been born into the Anglican church or who have converted and are still within it; overall it shows just how broad we are as a church and just how important our church is to us for all kinds of reasons.

On a personal level, I was particularly interested to read Hugh Montefiore's input because I have had the same experience as he has and I am sure that anyone could read this book and find someone who thinks or feels the same or has had similar experiences.

I think that anyone who has ever had or still has a faith or religious tradition would find something in this book that would resonate with them at some level.
