Product Description

Product Description
In February 1984, David Jenkins received an invitation from then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, to become Bishop of Durham. His tenancy of the See was to become one of the most controversial in its history. He hit the headlines as the "unbelieving bishop" after his expositions of the Virgin Birth and the Resurrection. When York Minister burst into flames days after his consecration, his notoriety was assured. Now in retirement, he attempts to explain the man behind the controversy: how he came to his beliefs, and how that continuing and deepening faith in God carried him through the height of the controversies and remains with him today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Penetrating a deep mind, 19 Nov 2003

A beautiful book - vintage David Jenkins. At the same time it is an illuminating insight into what was going on for him during those turbulent years and an exploration of how Christianity can still work today - even in the face of a Church which can drive one so easily to atheism !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and truthful book, 8 Jan 2004
By A Customer
David Jenkins provides an honest and accessible introduction, via autobiography, to the developments in the Church which are confining it to a primitive worldview and ensuring its deserved destruction in the West. His analysis is accurate and incisive ; he does not mince his words.

Highly recommended for those who want a greater insight into the menace of fundamentalism.

1.0 out of 5 stars An Idol with feet of clay., 19 Jun 2003
By A Customer
I bought this book out of an admiration for David Jenkins, who, through his rational approach to Christianity, brought me out of the cold and into the church. However, in this book, professorial bombast thoroughly dominates out any hint of bishoply leadership. Although many factions in the church may be very trying, it ill behoves a writer of this stature to verbally malign those with whom he disagrees. I found my sympathies with his opponents increasing as I read through the book. In summary, a disappointing book, written in the style of an angry 'young' man.
