The anti-hero of this satirical novel is a somewhat weak and socially inadequate son of a rich industrialist. After leaving his rural home town to study at Berlin university he returns to take over the running of his father's business. Initially revelling in this position of power, he slowly begins to alienate those around him and the business begins to fail. In desperation he seeks to further extend his power in local politics and becomes a fanatical supporter of national institutions and of the emperor. He accuses his political adversaries as disloyal liberals and in so doing stirs up a hot-bed of accusation and distrust.

This is a dark, disturbing and in parts comical novel about the pursuit and abuse of power made all the more poignant by the fact it was written before the events of the mid-20th century and the rise of Nazism in Germany.
