5.0 out of 5 stars "Reading Heller is like Eating Halvah", 8 Dec 2005
"Reading a book by Joseph Heller," writes Judith Ruderman, "can be compared to eating that sticky, sweet confection called halvah, favoured by Jews of eastern European extraction: a little bit is very rich, surfeits the appetite quickly, and can lead to indeigestion. It is also, however, tasty and nourishing." This biographical and critical book considers the Heller phenomenon by first discussing his life before examining each of his novels. A separate chapter discusses Heller as a Jewish-American writer and places much of his work in the tradition of "Yiddish schlemiel humour" as well as in more serious traditions. This lively and provocative guide to the man, and to the form and meaning of his work, will readily appeal to his many devoted readers.
