5.0 out of 5 stars The Day the Music Died by Larry Lehmer, 24 Jan 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Day the Music Died (Paperback)
Larry Lehmer has written a very well researched and thoroughly detailed book. The last time that I read a book that paid this close of attention to detail was "Truman" by David McCullough. Lehmer takes the time to give a biography of each star, as well as the story of their often forgotten pilot, Roger Peterson. In addition, Lehmer explores each theory of how the doomed aircraft may have gone down, remote as some of those possibilities may be. Lehmer's interviews with people who were actually on the Winter Dance Party tour with the three stars gives the reader a first-hand experience that would not have been possible with book research alone. He is able to portray the human aspect of the tragedy, as opposed to simply a timeline account. Never a dull moment, Lehmer's writing makes this book a joy to read. He doesn't leave a single thing out, providing the most thorough account of the Winter Dance Party tour, and, ultimately, the plane crash, to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Buddy Holly and 'the final tour', 30 Aug 2004
By Mr. Andrew Crowther - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a recent fan of buddy holly (23yrs old) i found a recommendation toward this book within a major fan club web site to the late buddy holly.

This book gives an excellent overview of the final tour, with obvious emphasis on buddy holly and his remaining legacy.

Insightful commentary and quotes from witnesses (fans, promoters, reporters alike) give the reader an idea of the torment of travelling in those weather conditions in 1959, from stop to stop on the tour as well as little insights into how the artists were feeling along each stop of the tour.

Lemar reviews the CAB report into the crash and poses several 'theories' which have come to light as to contributory factors on top of or in contradiction to the CAB report.

The artists backgrounds are summarised in terms of their rise to fame and a subsequent 'where are they now' section updates the reader on all characters mentioned in the book from the artists publishers, managers and family to CAB flight investigators, even informing the reader of the status of the ballrooms featured on the tour.

Two sections of pictures are displayed in the book, the first showing photos from a selection of stops on the winter dance party, the second, showing pictures of the grim crash site and subsequent investigation.

Lemar also offers a nice touch by dedicating the book and several pages to the pilot of the ill-fated flight, roger peterson.

A minor criticism may be the slight lack of depth of information given by the author, especially in terms of information relating to specific shows within the winter dance party, however, overall, an excellent book and one which, for a recent buddy holly fan, is a great prelude to reading a biography of the great man.

well done lemar!
