Product Description

Synopsis

Featuring more than 200 photographs, this is a revealing behind-the-scenes glimpse into both the public and the private persona of musician-singer-songwriter, Paul McCartney. The photographs are all the work of Jorie Gracen, a professional photographer with access to Paul McCartney from 1976 to 2000. Culled from Gracen's vast archive of photos taken during tours, record signings, private parties, press conferences and backstage moments, this volume seeks to capture the many faces of the artist: musician, devoted husband, proud father, environmentalist, animal rights activist and idol. Personal commentary from the author, lively accounts by fans, and intriguing statements by McCartney himself complete this tribute.

5.0 out of 5 stars a foto feast for fans, 11 Sep 2000
By C. Cleveland (Dryden, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book should be a pleasure for anyone who enjoys very good photography, and is a veritable feast for McCartney fans. The vast majority of the photos were take during three McCartney tours, with Wings in 1976 and with the new band in '89-90 and 1993, and while he is on stage performing. The face that was unlined and unfinished in 1964 matures before our eyes in this photographic record of a man who obviously enjoys performance even more at 51 than he did at 21. It's easy to see why politically correct rock critics can't take him seriously--McCartney is deeply into Unauthorized Fun. He feels it would be a sin to suppress his inner goof ball. And he appears to believe that music is a communal experience that should be relished as much by the performers as the audience. He communes with the music in these photos, concentrates on playing when necessary, but always finds time to react to the audience. He mugs, he grins, he tries to break up the guitar player, and his very high level of joy is as infectious in these photos as it is in his music.

There are some useful detailed reports of the concerts, and some lively interviews with McCartney, but just as appealing, I find, are the testimonies from fans, told in their own words. Their stories have to do with getting to the concerts, brief encounters with Paul and Linda, and what it all meant to them. What it meant was that they heard a terrific concert while having the experience of a lifetime.

If you are a hopeless romantic, a McCartney fan, an admirer of good photography, or just enjoy watching a man who made his passion into his career (or all of the above), this book's for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures! A nice souvenir !, 21 Nov 2000
By teresa "teresa" (Lisboa Portugal) - See all my reviews
Great Pictures of most of Paul McCartney solo live gigs ! A nice souvenir for those who, like myself, were lucky "to see him standing there" and a good collection of live photos for all the McCartney fans who didn't manage to be there. However ,I think the cover could be a little less 70's.
