4.0 out of 5 stars The best book I have found on the techniques of oil painting, 7 Jun 2001
By tinaviljoen@cs.com (London. England) - See all my reviews
Bill Creevy manages to cover a wide range of subjects in a relatively small book. In addition to traditonal oils and oil painting techniques he discusses alkyds, water-miscible oils and oil sticks. My quibble with this book and most others is that while he covers wipe-out methods and 'alla prima' he never discusses how to mix oil paints with solvents or painting mediums in detail. I know you are not supposed to over-thin and you have to work 'fat over lean'. But I don't know when thin is too thin! I found he does stick to the subject more than 'Painting with Oils' by Patricia Monahan which spends too much time discussing composition and colour mixing (pretty much the same for oils and water-based media). I do recommend it.
