3.0 out of 5 stars How to set up your own comic business., 18 Jul 2004
By A Customer
I'd not heard of Tony C. Caputo prior to reading the book, nor did I let that put me off purchasing it. Clearly he's spent a considerable number of years within the comics industry working on a number of titles and in a variety of roles. Tony C. Caputo certainly knows his stuff, and explains in straightforward terms the pitfalls and benefits of starting your own comic book empire: Leading you from your initial idea to the finished product as well as showing examples of business agreements, writing press releases through to selling secondary rights. Whilst crammed with information, a great deal of it useful, though not as detailed as I would have liked: Dylux? Linescreens? Finishers? What are these? Tell me much more! Occasionally the book is interspersed with irrelevant quips that state exceedingly obvious: "To call a foreign city you'll need the appropriate city and country codes" only adding to the books inconstancy. Whilst only one chapter is dedicated to the creation of the comic book several are given over to distribution, marketing strategies and public relations. Herein lies the book's strength and focus, devised for those who want to set up their own comic as a commercial venture, not as a labour of love. In fact Caputo states that "the only real difference between fine art and commercial art is a deadline." And for him comics mean big bucks, which is the antitheses of David Sim's "Cerebus Guide to Self Publishing", of the same year, who feels that he could have made more money baby sitting instead of drawing comics. For other aspiring comic book artists I would advise to read both in order to strike the perfect balance between commercial success and artistic merit.

The worst criticsm of the book, albeight a minor aesthetic one, not lies in it's content or illustration, but it's layout. The outer margins are much larger than the inner ones giving the impression that the words are simply slipping towards the book's spine, which distracted this reader from an otherwise informative read.
