Synopsis
My name is Zack, and I'm 11. I live in New Jersey with my mom and Margie. I call Margie my second mother. My mom and Margie are lesbians - they fell in love with each other and have a relationship together. Sometimes kids say really mean things about gay people, and I know that having lesbian mothers is strange. But I think we live the way every family does. In this superb first person account, 11 year old Zack openly talks about his experience of growing up in a family with two lesbians - his mother Aimee and her partner Margie. When Zack was five years old his parents divorced and his mum met Margie who now lives with them and with Dewey Margaret - his baby sister who is the baby of Aimee and Margie. In addition to discussing his hobbies and school life, Zack honestly relates to the reader his feelings for his father - who he maintains regular contact with - and for the other members of his family, and reveals the prejudices he encounters and how he maturely deals with them.
A comprehensive and touching work that is packed with additional information, a glossary, suggested further reading and useful resources, this is an ideal introduction to families with gay parents, and a great starting point for discussions about families, homosexuallty and tolerance for young readers.
