Product Description

Jesse may no longer be a soul-stealing succubus, but she's got a Hell of a past. She'd love to come clean to her sweet, super-hot boyfriend Paul, but how exactly does a girl start that conversation? There's no name tag that reads: "I Used to Have Sex with Men before Taking Their Souls to the Lake of Fire - Ask Me How!" Just like some people are worth being monogamous for (shudder), some secrets are worth keeping. Like the fact that bad boy incubus Daunuan keeps popping up from the Underworld to put some toe-curling moves on her; that her former associates are trying to strong-arm her back into the fold; and that every supernatural entity on the planet seems to want to have a conversation with her in the bathroom. But someone in the Underworld isn't ready to play nice (go figure), and this time, the stakes are nothing less than Paul's immortal soul.If Hell wants Jesse back so badly, they've got her. But payback's a bitch, and this bitch is about to rock Hell like a hurricane - or lose her soul trying...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Hell on Earth" series book 2, 9 Mar 2008
By Book Addict - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
The sequel to stunning debut novel "Hell's Belles", in this book Jesse Harris (aka Jezebel); the ex soul stealing succubus now a mortal with her own soul, has moved in with the love of her life; Vice cop Paul Hamilton. Yet whilst Jesse is still trying to keep off Hell's radar, an awful lot of "old friends" are determined she return. Unable to coax, terrify or seduce her into returning willingly, someone starts to play extremely dirty. When Paul's soul is illegally taken to Hell, Jesse finds herself arranging her own death so she can follow him. Returning to her old haunting ground she is soon dealing with familiar enemies whilst attempting to rescue her lover and her best friend.

Angel, the um Angel is introduced and makes if clear that her new job as a Seducer is far from suitable for her virginal nature; her ambitions firmly lying in the Heavenly Choir area. Unfortunately Archangel Michael, the Viceroy of Heaven and now the new King of Hell is establishing new laws in the Underworld and after obliterating several high ranking demons, no one appears to be objecting to his rather bad ideas. Yet if it means getting Paul's soul back safely in the mortal realm, Jesse will take on the Ruler of Hell himself even if it damns her own soul for eternity.

There's no denying there is plenty of sex in this book; however when dealing with the creatures of Hell plus an ex-succubus turned exotic dancer (well a girl still needs her fix of lust even if she's no longer a working demon) what can you expect. Incubus Daunuan (Daun) makes several significant appearances, determined to get his hands on Jesse's soul (and any parts of her anatomy he can snag a feel) and in fact he gets his own story later this year when book 3 "Hotter than Hell" is released in August. Jesse again is a creature of total contradictions; a likeable demon with hugely questionable morals. Although totally in love with Paul she is required to perform certain deeds which could constitute as unfaithful and even before Paul's life is threatened she almost falls under the seductive spell of Daun on several occasions. Yet you've got to admire a girl who would not only go to Hell and back (quite literally) to get her man but also call the powerful Queen of Hell a "skanky ho" whilst trying to bash her brains out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jesse the Succubus is Back!, 9 Jan 2009
By Lesley70 - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The Road to Hell continues Jesse Harris's story begun in Hell's Belles. Jesse - now mortal - is trying to enjoy the life she has with Paul, her boyfriend. Unfortunately Hell doesn't want to let her go that easily. And they're willing to use Paul's immortal soul to get her back.

I enjoyed this slightly more than Hell's Belles. Maybe I've settled into the characters more? Jesse is even more sarcastic, sardonic and wickedly witty than she was in the previous book. I'm sure her mental note count has increased.

"Mental note: Finish planning the rescue before executing it."

This series is still being marketed as Parnormal Romance - so wrong. Jesse is a great heroine, one of my favourites in Urban Fantasy, but I just don't see her as PNR material. Jesse seduces a female angel (not her girlfriend), has sex with an incubus (not her boyfriend) and the book starts with her doing a lap dance. Definitely not your typical PNR heroine, she's rude, crude, socially unacceptable - and I absolutely love her.

"You can't claim me for Hell. My soul's clean." Benefit of being only thirty days old in mortal years: that's not a lot of time to wreak havoc."

One of my favourite things about Jesse is that she doesn't try to be anything other than what she is - though admittedly she is trying to do her best with the whole human having a soul thing. But even though she has all the tact of a brick in the face, she still manages to pick up friends and seduce angels.

If I had to sum up what The Road to Hell was for me - it's a kind of Urban Fantasy Orpheus and Eurydice tale but with demons, sex and a reversal of gender roles. The book is in two halves - the first part dealing with Hell doing its utmost to get Jesse back, and the second part as Jesse descends back into Hell having been left with no other choice but to return. It has to be said there are a lot less jokes in the second half of the book, but the stakes are a lot higher, so there's less to be witty about.

The second half didn't work quite as well for me. Maybe because I'm not completely sure where the story is going, so I'm finding the whole Angels take over Hell thing a little bit difficult to get my head round. At the end it feels like Jesse's story is complete - if only for the moment. But the overall arc of what's happening between Heaven, Hell and Earth is still unresolved. I'm hoping we get more answers in Book 3 Hotter than Hell (Daun's story).
