5.0 out of 5 stars Vivid and enjoyable, 10 Jul 2002
By A Customer
It is some time since I have closed a romance with unreserved enjoyment. But The Exiles was great - the heroine was intelligent and resourceful and reacted when people patronised her, the hero was tortured and suffering and the setting, Vienna in 1813, was glittering and vivid but not overpowering. Abrams has an interesting take on Napoleonic Europe, as she explores the role of Jewish financiers in the intrigues and politicking, again, with a light touch. Secondary characters are given individuality and depth, and characters react within the bounds of believability despite some fairly unbelievable situations. The villains are as plausible as the good guys and the love story is conducted within the mores of the time but with plenty of suppressed passion and sizzle.
