5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrific!!!, 16 Jun 2001
This book is excellent. There are some changes in character description between this book and its preview in Beneath A Blood Red Moon, but they're all for the better.

Lucian DeVeau has got to be the sexiest man in any of the romance novels I've ever read. You will be fantasizing about him for weeks to come!! The love scenes are incredible. 100% guarantee that you will be satisfied with this book. A definite must read, even if vampire chronicles are not your thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed!, 10 Oct 2004

(REAL NAME)
I usually like this author alot but this time, the book wasn't quite up to the standard of what I have come to expect from Ms Drake. The lead character was quite interesting. I especially am quite fond of her rather blunt statement that she was not a fish! And there were quite a few amusing moments. I think what let the book down was the male lead in this book. Lucian came across as a little bit too 2-D. Or it might simply be that he was being reserved, true to the Mr Darcy form and that was why I felt that I couldn't quite get a handle on him. Surely there must be more to him than his history and his pain. The supporting characters were ace though. I especially did love the band of writers who rush to our heroine's rescue. And her sister Shanna was a very vivid character in the book. Very real and very sassy! You also get a nice feel for New Orleons from this book and have hidden yearnings to sit on a side walk cafe and eat beighnets and drink coffee while listenning to sultry jazz music, while scoping the scene for vampires and men in black clothes. That seems to be in vogur at the moment. To quote another author: 'it's hard to be the baddest thing around in pastels' I suppose.
I suppose for me, the most disappointing thing about this book was the ending. It just sort of trailed off in a come what may sort of way and I kept thinking...and then what? Maybe that was what the author wanted me to feel but I was sort of hankering for a happy ever after type ending. I need closure and I think this book seems ideally prepped for a sequel rather than anything else.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dragged my way through it!, 14 July 2004
By A Customer
I really dislike writing a negative review as my policy is that there is always something good you can mention about any 'work of art' be it a picture or in this case, a book. I am however forced to write a negative review having dragged myself through some of the most dull writing I have ever had the misfortune to read. Having bought the book based on the glowing reviews on this site, I was looking forward to reading it. I expected a certain amount of cliched writing and plotting (and I was not disappointed on this score, but more on this later...) as a vampire romance is a vampire romance, but what I did not expect was the really paint-stripping writing style, cardboard 2D heroine and unfleshed, cliched tortured hero. I can honestly say I didn't like or feel for any of the characters, the writing didn't drag me in enough to do this, but I think the most gauling thing about the book, considering its genre, was the lack of any real chemistry between the lead characters - it was flat and hallow on the sizzle-o-meter. And yes, there were the obligatory sex scenes, but because of the lack of snap-crackle-and-pop between the characters and any real belief they were in love, they felt tawdry to read. As for the drivel that passed for a plot, with the hero's flashbacks, reincarnated 'love' (with heroine) and vampiress baddie and sidekick, it was a case of paint-by-numbers for me, the writing becoming increasingly predictable and trite. I would not recommend this book.
