4.0 out of 5 stars Great on limit poker - but not much on pot limit or no limit, 4 April 2002
By A Customer
Carson plays a lot of emphasis on knowing what sort of game you are in, whether it's loose-tight, passive-aggressive, and adjusting your play accordingly. He also points out that poker is about winning the most money, not just the most pots, and some of his advice came as a surprise to me. For instance, with A-A in the hole, most people would recommend raising to drive as many as possible out. Carson says this is the way to make pocket rockets win most often, but if you want to make the most money you should try and keep as many players in as you can.

His description of evaluating odds is extensive and I found it particularly useful.

However, one word of warning. This is a book on limit poker. Pot Limit and No Limit are discussed very briefly in a couple of pages.

3.0 out of 5 stars WARNING, 8 Sep 2003
By Ms. SAMANTHA ANDERSON "sam" (Shetland) - See all my reviews

This is a book on LIMIT holdem. It is a great book and the sections on image, game type, and player type are worth it alone. However all the ideas are based on limit games, and usually loose agressive ones. The ideas are great for this type of game but if you play pot limit or no limit it is probably not the best book to start with. There are 2 pages at the end of the book about pot limit and no limit which basically say, "ignore what you have just read and always fold unless you have the nuts". So a really great book but probably not the best introductory book for pot limit or no limit players.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guide to the game., 11 Dec 2002
I can't recommend this book enough for those wanting to learn how to play Texas Holdem (better). It's packed with useful advice on calculating the best plays for different situations eg tight/loose and passive/aggressive opponents. I particularly liked his advice on when to carry on playing a hand based on the odds (calculated and implied) of you drawing a card which is likely to give you the best hand. This tool, together with knowing when to bet aggressively to damage the drawing odds of your opponents and/or when you have the best drawing hand against a large field, are essential to becoming a better player and he covers this area with great fluency and comprehensively.
Apart from anything else, it's a substantial book at an excellent value price. I read it once, played a few games on the net and went back to read it again and I understood more on the second reading.
