3.0 out of 5 stars Woman talk, Men Drive!!, 7 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Ann Moir and David Jessel offer an interesting insight into the differences in thought processing between men and women. Their thesis, that due to hormonal changes in the womb during pregnancy the brains of the male or female fetus develop along different physiological paths .

Their conclusion that male brains are better adapted to 'abstract and mathematical' thought while female brains are ' wired ' for better language and inter-personal' thought processing . The scientific methodology used to underpin the bulk of the research is at best narrow, by their own admission one experiment on right left brain function was flawed in it's ability to be replicated .This research on soldiers who had suffered brain trauma in combat, the sample of female participants in this experiment was limited by virtue of the fact that there are very few female soldiers so fewer research participants, another experiment uses the discredited use of questionnaires amongst male undergraduates whom are not representative of the population as a whole.

I found 'Brainsex' interesting in that it gives a little insight into the palpable cognitive differences that we know exist between the sexes , however it does not fully explore sociological and other psychological perspectives that may give a clue to the roles of both men and women in contemporary society . This book is an interesting read for a biological perspective on thought processing however the view it gives should not be taken in isolation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Several Useful Insights...but Read with Discretion!, 24 Aug 2008
This review is from: Brain Sex (Paperback)
Brain Sex argues that men and women are different biologically. The authors debate that the brain is constructed differently in men and women, resulting in different perceptions, priorities and behaviors.

Brain Sex explores the power that men and women have. It explains that men's power traditionally stems from dominance and aggression. Women's power is more subtle. It is the force that creates relationships, binds families, and builds societies. This book also explores the different interests women and men. Women are more people oriented than men and men are more interested in things.

The book acknowledges that there are countless variations between male and female characteristics. Male and female characteristics overlap. As with other books that argue that genes are overwhelmingly directors of actions and reactions, Brain Sex needs to be read with discretion.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's all in the Biology! Stupid, 29 Jun 2008
By F. R. Smith "Wavesound" (Cardiff UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I can't believe that this book was written in 1989!
What has changed since then as regards the equality of the sexes?
Here we can read about the fundamental differences at the heart of this debate.
We can never be equal and shouldn't want to be.
The real skill is in bringing the differences into a complimentary understanding and use this understanding to change society for the better.
We can now see how our education system is failing both male and females and bringing this failure into the work place.
The male dominated work ethic will have to change, as we are seeing now slowly.
Only by embracing the differences can we attain a much fairer society.
Whether you agree or not with the outcomes just read it .
