Product Description

Synopsis
"Adobe Photoshop" is a popular computer programme of remarkable power, allowing users to create extraordinary effects with their works. This book, designed to give instruction on digital imaging specifically to photographers, provides step-by-step reconstructions of 20 digitally-enhanced images, to enable the reader to understand the process behind their creation. Tricks such as drop shadows, special effects, filters, selective focus and others are presented, in a fashion designed to instil confidence in readers learning these effects.

From the Publisher
All creativity starts with an idea.
You can produce the most technically brilliant shot, with every pixel massaged to perfection, but if the idea behind it is not good, the image will fall short every time.

Digital Wizardry is an idea book--one filled with cutting-edge, high-end imagery and written expressly for photographers and other creative people who want to learn Photoshop or take their current Photoshop skills to the next level. Brimming with practical technical information and savvy business tips, Digital Wizardry focuses intensively on the creative process involved in producing top-shelf, stand-alone images that must convey a concept while at the same time dazzle and impress.

Bryan Allen, well known in the field of professional photography and digital imaging as a Photoshop "Master," takes the reader step by step through the development and execution of many of his real-life commercial assignments, offering a view into his thought processes. This in-depth coverage of the creative process--from idea through finished image--gives readers an invaluable inside look at the techniques and strategies behind the magic.

Digital Wizardry is organized into three easy-to-use sections. The first part, "Start with an Idea," contains chapters on creative beginnings, quality control, and the basic techniques involved in optimizing Photoshop. The second section, "Creative Applications," shows how it is all put together through an in-depth look at a portfolio of real-life commercial assignments. The last part, "Technical and Business Information," comprises chapters on selecting the right hardware, going from pixels to press, supplemental software, and the professional considerations of running a successful business.

With its experience-rich approach to learning Photoshop, Digital Wizardry is an invaluable resource readers can turn to whenever they need information or inspiration.

FROM THE FOREWORD BY MICHAEL J. McNAMARA,

Technology Editor of Popular Photography Magazine

"Bryan Allen's Digital Wizardry should stand out among the throngs of Photoshop tutorials lining the shelves in bookstores. . . . Reading this book is like hiring several people--a business consultant to help you get your business started, a Photoshop tutor to teach you the most useful techniques, a pre-press specialist to help you get your images out in the right format, and a graphic designer to help you learn how to turn your ideas into reality.

"Through this book, Bryan Allen has found a way to combine his photographic vision, his incredible imagination, and his technical proficiency into a manual that teaches more about the creative process than any other work on Photoshop. The beautiful photos and collages found in this book, combined with the step-by-step descriptions of the techniques he used to make them, prove that while technical proficiency is needed to master Photoshop, imiagination and creativity are needed to become a Master. For that reason alone, Digital Wizardry is an exceptional book that I think should be part of any Photoshop curriculum, and a reference to turn to when you need inspiration."

4.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate Photoshop technique compilation., 12 Feb 2000
By A Customer
A practical book packed with images the writer has created commercially, which makes the advice here even better.

The whole process of creating an image is explained, from the initial idea, through quality control, to the final assembly. Advice on how to tune up Photoshop, what sort of system you will need and additional programs you might consider are well detailed in later sections.

Some of the images are truly stunning, and once the process is explained they are easy to re-create.

Complete step by step illustrations are given, showing all the source images that are used to make a final high quality picture.

This book really helps to hone your digital technique, and while it is written for photoshop, many other programs have now caught up with most of the features that are used in the book.

Any photographer considering a career in digital imagery should give this book a read. If you've ever wondered what all those buttons do in photoshop, or you just need to speed up the process of making an image you're bound to find the solution in this book. It's surprising how many tricks are packed into the 160 pages.

All the important tools, filters and features are explained and given a working over, and a few items you may have been overlooking for some time surface and prove most useful.

Definitely the ultimate Photoshop book for the serious photographer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stimulate your imagination, 4 Nov 1999
By C. Judge "Chris Judge" (Derbyshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For anyone who revers books I have a terrible confession, I use highlighter on new books! Only to underline points of interest you understand, but nevertheless.... I now have a flourescent green copy of Digital Wizardry. On every page there are interesting techniques and imagination you can't wait to emulate. So I have pictures of my Grandson in which he appears to glow, pictures of my house complete with lightning etc. etc. Bryen Allen takes you through most of the more creative tools available in Photoshop by showing the techniques He used to complete real commercial assignments, and not one filter or gimmicky software in sight. The basics are covered too including optomising both hardware(Mac, though most points also apply to PC users too)and Photoshop itself. The book concludes with a brief taster of Bryce and Painter 5, and a whorthwhile summary of what approach is needed to succeed in a very cut-throat business. Only 4 crowns? Yes I wanted more. The author uses Photoshop 4. Last point, the copy I received was properly bound and is a quality item. Highly recommended.
