5.0 out of 5 stars The guide I never leave home without!, 19 Nov 2002
I have nothing but words of praise for Mr Campbell's book: while I can happily leaf through photography handbooks and guides to techniques, there are few which will entice me to pick up my camera, and fewer still that I would consider adding to the weight I carry around with me when I go off into the wilds! Indeed, as an enthusiastic amateur "with a good eye" and an allergy to following instructions, I find it telling that I will consistently pack my bags and include at the very least, photocopies of several pages of this book.

What makes the difference for me between this and the contents of the rest of my "armchair photography" shelf are style and comprehensiveness. As far as style is concerned, this book is very direct, it explains technical jargon, and illustrates the techniques and advice it offers with appropriate, not to mention beautiful examples. In terms of its comprehensiveness, Campbell packs into his 144 pages the essence of great photography that takes other authors many times more pages.

Of particular interest, to the beginner especially, are the pages which cover the total weight / essential equipment ratio. In these pages are options for equipment as well as essential advice about safety equipment. The pages I never leave home without are the tables of low-light exposures which I have used again and again to capture wonderful images.

This book is irreplaceable and is the one, out of many, that I go back to time and time again.
