5.0 out of 5 stars An essential text for the first year medical student, 19 Jan 2003
This text is perhaps one of the most valuable additions to any medical student's library; it covers practically every area of medical physiology in greater depth than most other recommended physiology textbooks (such as Pocock & Richards or Vander et al). Edited by Berne and levy, the text is subdivided into eight parts, each concerning a particular system and written by a Professor of Physiology or Medicine.
'Physiology' is a well written book, though it can be tough to use for the first couple of weeks - in many areas it is far too detailed, requiring several careful readings and includes considerable amounts of information more relevant to Experimental Physiology than medicine. This point is also brought to ones notice through the extensive use of data obtained from dogs to illustrate physiological mechanisms and principals.
This having been said, Berne & Levy have compiled a tremendous text, which is well worth spending a little more time getting to grips with. Other texts may be easier to read or more colourful, but there are few that can impart as much useful and detailed information.
Some may find this text more useful if it is used along side a less detailed, more reader friendly text. In such cases I would strongly recommend Pocock and Richards 'Human Physiology' or 'Human physiology' by Vander et al.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful study aid, 28 Feb 2006
By Mr. Andrew Parker "andy_p_" (West Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It seems that there is no set text to read when you do medicine. Lecturers all advise you buy different books. If you listened to them all you would have no money left for the more important things in life. So I bought this one. It seems pretty meaty, has lots of pages (therefore must be full of information), and was pretty much the same price as all the others.
Having used it for a few months now I am very pleased with my decision to buy this book. It is great to look at when I go through my lecture notes as it fills in all the blanks (so far) that I have missed or points that i need clarifying. All in all, the book provides accurate and detailed information on all the physiology aspects of my course so far.
Why then does it not get 5 stars? To be honest I can imagine a better book. I only have 1 all purpose physiology textbook but I would like one that has better diagrams-I respond well to colour, and this one only has an unattractive green hue.
Still, I would recommend this book, but perhaps getting it out of the library first would be a good idea.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough and well explained insight into human physiology, 28 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This book may seem rather overwhelming at first, and although it is not for the faint-hearted it provides and excellent approach to learning the basic and more detailed aspects of human physiology. Admittedly, there is often a need to work through chapters sequentially - many references and abbreviations are mentioned only once earlier on in the book. Explanations are thorough however, and well presented. A must for any first or second year medical or dental student out there!
