Product Description

Product Description

An 1830s African-American slave narrative written in Arabic. Dafydd Morgan, the only American immigrant novel published in Welsh. The Native American epic, Walum Olum, in the Lenape language. Theodor Adorno's dream transcripts, in German. Largely ignored in the debates over canon and multiculturalism in America, indigenous American works written in languages other than English have over time disappeared from view. This anthology brings together American writings in diverse languages from Arabic and Spanish to Swedish and Yiddish, among others. Presenting each work in its original language with facing page translation, the book provides a complement to all other anthologies of American writing, and will serve to complicate our understanding of what exactly American literature is.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent contribution to multicultural America, 12 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Werner Sollors' critical anthology is a very timely contribution to the relatively young multicultural self-image of the USA. Written by U.S. and international scholars, many of the essays remind us of the fact that, until about 1920, "American Literature" was understood as "literature written in the USA" in a variety of languages other than English, and that these works were also included in the anthologies and histories of American Literature. Several of the book's essays trace the narrowing of the concept of American Literature to that of "English only" over the past seven decades; they also provide enlightening - and often highly entertaining - examples of novels, short stories, poems, and plays written in German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, Yiddish, and other languages, and present the reader with a fascinating mosaic of Americas's truly multicultural literary heritage. With regard to contemporary issues in an age of rapid globalization, Sollors' introduction points to the paradoxical fact that, in spite of the new multicultural consensus in the USA, the percentage of Americans who speak a language other than English continues to decline. Sollors' proposal for the preservation of America's rich multilingual heritage is to integrate "English plus" (another language) in school curriculums. This may not make him many friends among the proponents of current "English only" movements in several regions of the USA, but it is to be hoped that more cosmopolitan-minded American opinion leaders recognize this idea as a very inviting road towards multicultural practice. Within a generation or two, the concept of "English plus" may even ensure that in the USA - unlike in most other countries of the globe - learning another language is no longer considered something out of the ordinary.
