Product Description

Washington Post Book World, February 17, 2002

McAllester displays the natural gifts of a storyteller who is able to develop characters, build tension, and keep a plot churning. . . riveting. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

McAllester's spare, understated prose is potent, as is his exploration of the human side of geopolitics and war. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars A journalist informed only after the fact, 9 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Easy to read but sloppily constructed account of the conflict in Kosovo. As is all too typical of modern journalists, the author's lack of knowledge about the history of the region is palpable, and his self-aggrandizing description of his journey over the mountains between Montenegro and Kosovo frequently crosses the border into melodrama. You can feel him composing his book outline even as he interviews wretched Kosovar refugees. What might have been a reasonably interesting essay has been imperfectly expanded into a book.

An excellent insight into the Kosovan war from this Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. Essential reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and informative account of war that you must read!, 26 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This is a hugely readable book about something we all thought we knew about but really only had an inkling of. It's full of human fear and suffering but also strength, both in the lives it describes and that of the author and his colleagues - an insight into what really happens to people in wartime. The picture it paints is gripping and involving - you do and don't want to hear what is happening to the people you get to know - and the language is simultaneously informative and evocative. This is a really good read and you will come out appaulled by its reality but feeling better for knowing.
