5.0 out of 5 stars Stands out among the many books on project management., 14 Feb 2009
This is the second edition by a highly credible expert in the field. Rapid change and the pressures of intense competition have caused more organizational work to become project work.

A great deal of material is now available of good quality on this topic. You could easily write a great deal on the strengths of this book, it covers the essentials of project management in a straight forward way. It is a good buy.

I really liked the wide range of carefully chosen quotations that Michael Thomsett, uses in the book eg

* "Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
- George S Patton.

Some assignments in the project management area, seem to be couched in Tayloristic - scientific management thinking, shutting out the often original and addded value management contributions that might be made as an illustration one senior director said to me, "I dont want you to think, just do." Why not just hire a robot?

* "For all the intellect and technique a manager can muster, his success turns on a subtle and elusive quality - the degree to which he can stimulate people to make the most of their own inherent capabilities."
- Lester R Bittle.

The serious point is that things like effective people management and creativity, need to be recognised in the often "mechanistic" project field, if you want to get commitment and meaningful results.

Also worth your consideration are:

* The Project Manager as Change agent - Leadership, Influence and Negotiation. Plus -

* Managing Projects large and small - the fundemental skills for delivering on budget and on time. This is part of the Harvard Business Essentials series.

Stan Felstead - Interchange Resources - UK.
