Anita Rosen ("AR") has made a brave attempt to set out the e-commerce scene for your run-of-the-mill business manager. Unfortunately, this guide misfires and does not provide SAS tried-and-tested techniques for setting up and managing a successful e-commerce business.

The book consists of an easy to read series of Questions & Answers. However, AR has deliberately chosen to remain a generalist in describing the e-commerce field so as to maximise her catchment area with business executives of all rank and file. This means that most executives seeking a more in-depth analysis will be bitterly disappointed. The book is topical, provides good hints which have been distilled out of someone's practice but remains very superficial.

Admittedly, no perfect implementation book exists other than the in-house knowledge compiled by those companies having gone through the painful exercise of setting up from scratch. Hence, executives will have to continue to trawl trough a range of publications ranging from generalist books (e.g. Ephraim and Turban's exhaustive "E-commerce - a managerial perspective"), cult books (e.g. Hagel's "Net Worth"), trade magazines (e.g. Business 2.0 and Red Herring) as well as the more specialist technical books such as Zeff & Aransonson "Advertising on the Internet", Nielsen's "Designing Web Usability" and Menascé & Almeida "Scaling for E-Business" (all available through Amazon).

If all of this makes no sense whatever to you, dear business manager, you will be more than happy to read AR's book. It is a nice introduction by the end of which you will want to read the follow-up "survival guide for the job seeker" as your competitors will have cosily taken control of your market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Genrally 4*, but personal 2*, 15 Jun 2000
It is a well structured well written introductory guide and will give managers / small business owners enough information to be able to make accurate decisions. Unfortunately, I was looking for something a little more gritty - a fault of mine rather than that of the author
