Product Description

Product Description

Here, Phillip Sponenberg has provided the equine and veterinary community with a textbook outlining the genetic properties of colour as it appears in horses and donkeys. "Equine Colour Genetics" provides the most up-to-date information and standard terminology and nomenclature associated with horse colour genetics in a very clear, readable style. The four-colour photographic illustrations highlight the points made in the text and are crucial to understanding the subject. This text serves as a reference for horse production courses and is useful to students, veterinarians, and horse breeders. The text first delves into genetic mechanisms and interactions that explain the step-by-step process that results in hundreds of different colours of horses. Rare colours are given detailed treatment as well as the colours grey and roan. Sponenberg deftly describes how the genetic mechanisms are organised to produce such colours and patterns.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good genetics, but lacks more photos., 27 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I looked very much forward to receiving this book, as I've been a horse color enthusiast for a long time. It is a great "Bible" for the people studying horse colors, a very good reference. What I would have wanted to see were more pictures, both of common colors and rare colors. When in doubt about what color a particular horse is, pictures are a very valuable help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for breeders who are interested in color, 5 Jun 1999
By A Customer
As a breeder of Quarter Horses and Paints, I've found this book to be an excellent tool to help make breeding decisions. It has also proven to be an extrememly accurate predictor of the color of foals from a particular mating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what the title says., 27 Nov 2000
By Carole Knowles-pfeiffer "Carole Knowles-Pfeiffer" (Plymouth England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A fascinating book for the REALLY committed enthusiast of this subject, but a complicated read - especially the sections about genetic control. Extensive and interesting text which could have been improved by the addition of more coloured photographs of better overall technical quality. I do not agree with some of the listed genotypes, which I think many people could find most confusing. There does not appear to be a list of gene designations, which would have been very useful if only to explain them more clearly.

The bibliography is excellent, but, unfortunately, this book does not contain an index. I think that this is a serious omission.
