Product Description

Product Description

An abridged pocket-size edition of the "Veterinary Drug Handbook, 4th edition". The author has condensed each monograph so as to maintain the book's reputation for accuracy, yet provided a smaller book that facilitates user-access in the clinical setting. Rounded corners and high-quality thinner paper add to the portability of this version. Extensively revised, this edition of the handbook includes 50 new drug monographs and many new dosages as well as updated dosages to newer references. "Prescriber Highlights" introduce each monograph adding quick reference convenience to this sourcebook. One-volume comprehensive coverage of routinely used veterinary drugs makes this book a useful resource for veterinarians, veterinary pharmacologists, pharmacists in veterinary hospital practice, laboratory and veterinary technicians, animal research facilities, and libraries that serve these groups. The drug monographs include: chemistry; storage/stability/compatibility; pharmacology; uses/indications; pharmacokinetics; contraindications/precautions/reproductive safety; adverse effects/warnings; overdosage/acute toxicity; drug interactions; doses-by species; monitoring parameters; client information; dosage; forms/preparations/FDA approval; and status/withholding times. The appendices feature: ophthalmic products; small animal therapeutic diets; chemotherapy protocols for treatment of neoplastic diseases in small animals; conversion tables; tables of parenteral fluids; abbreviations; and reference laboratory values.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference source, 16 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This book provides a very comprehensive review of most of the common drugs used in veterinary practice (as well as some of the more unusual ones!). Monographs on each drug provide the kind of useful information that it is essential to know especially when prescribing a drug that one is unfamiliar with. The monographs are well set out and easy to follow and often contain facts that it is difficult to find elsewhere such as compatibilites. Doses are listed for all the major species that one comes across in practice and in many cases several different doses are suggested based on the underlying disease being treated. A helpful feature is the references to the original papers where the dosages were used so that in unusual cases further information can be searched out from the source paper. The major criticism is that it is a US based book so tradenames are often unfamiliar and certain products are not available easily in the UK. However, I would still urge all UK practitioners to think about buying it as there is no UK equivalent that contains the breadth of information found in this book. In terms of ease of use and depth of information provided this book is unparalleled and I could not manage without it on my shelf.
