Synopsis
Facing negative public opinion and difficult conditions in their homelands, East European women are struggling to solidify the shaky social gains that were made under state-sponsored socialism. This collection gives voice to women throughout the region, from activists and scholars to high school students. In a variety of genres, including essays, interviews and autobiography, they address issues such as abortion, forced unemployment, rape and domestic violence, lesbianism, motherhood, ethnicity, war, media and religion.
From the Author
Ana's Land is a snapshot of grassroots women's groups
Ana's Land was created as an introduction of women's issues in EE. I didn't tell the women what to write and I didn't censor their topics of choice. I wanted the book to be a way of teaching Polish women about Hungarian women and Bulgarian women about Slovenian women. Women in Eastern Europe have little sense of the strength and power of their work and while they know about Western movements they know very little about each other. Ana's Land tries to bridge that gap and commend these women in their own context without putting Western interpretations on it. It serves best as a companion text to other, more theoretical texts.
