Product Description

Review

"A moving, lively, witty, sad book that revives once more the long dead Count Dracula." - Kirkus; "An example for future writers of show business biographies." - Library Journal "Remains passionately personal in its outlook, but thanks to new research and greater availability of films it also offers a more comprehensive and richly detailed study of Bela Lugosi's complex personality." - Paul M. Jensen

Product Description

Bela Lugosi won immediate fame with his portrayal of the immortal count in the 1931 film "Dracula". While the role may have given him eternal life on the silver screen, it doomed him to a career plagued by typecasting. After a decade of trying vainly to broaden his range and secure parts to challenge his acting abilities, Lugosi finally resigned himself to a career as the world's most recognizable vampire. His last years were spent as a forgotten and rather tragic figure. When he died in 1956, Lugosi could not have known that vindication of his talent would come-his face would adorn theatres, his image would appear on greeting cards and postage stamps, his film memorabilia would sell for more than he earned in his entire career, and his Hungarian accent would be instantly recognized by millions of people. Martin Landau's Oscar-winning role as Lugosi in the 1994 film "Ed Wood" added an ironic twist to a career that had ended in oblivion. In 1974, devoted Lugosi fan Arthur Lennig published a highly regarded biography of the unsung actor. More than twice the length of the original and completely rewritten, "The Immortal Count" provides deeper insights into Lugosi's films and personality. Drawing upon personal interviews, studio memos, shooting scripts, research in Romania and Hungary, and his own recollections, Lennig has written the definitive account of Lugosi's tragic life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lugosi - The Enigma, 22 April 2008
By Burlesque (Sweden) - See all my reviews
I carefully chose between the various Lugosi books available, and finally decided on this one. I do not regret my choice. The author has done his homework ... and not only at home. He even went to Hungary to dig up Mr. Lugosi's elusive theatrical credits in his own country and his even more elusive birth certificate. The background research on this volume is nothing short of breathtaking.

This book has the advantage of being both old and new: the original version is old enough that it includes interviews with people who knew Lugosi personally (including his last two wives) and the new version (twice the length of the original work!) is new enough to incorporate the latest findings about the great man's life and work. While answering all the questions that a Lugosi fan might reasonably ask, it still leaves the man as something of a puzzle and an enigma ... but that's the way it should be.

The Immortal Count is respectful, but still objective enough to admit Lugosi's faults and shortcomings. If there's anything negative to say about it, it's the fact that the author seems to hold some kind of half-concealed grudge against Boris Karloff, without backing it up with substantial fact.

If you're a Lugosi fan, this is the book. Accept no substitutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars top lugosi biography., 16 Jun 2006
By Mr. A. E. Ward Davies (Canterbury , England) - See all my reviews

this biography about the late, great bela lugosi was originally published back in 1974: a collector's item for certain.
this edition has been thoroughly updated with new information and a lot more photographs. the author consulted his original manuscript and has doubled the text to about 450 pages.
full marks to arthur lenig for the exceptional job of covering a life with its fair share of triumphs and failures.
everything from lugosi's childhood, his involvement with hungarian politics, early stage career, being typecast as "Dracula", his downfall in the 40s, death in the 50s and resurgence in popularity is all covered in exceptional detail. of equal importance, are the photographs selected which total about 115.
the book manages to be the perfect combination when it comes to lugosi's life and career.
perhaps the film that is most covered is "Dracula." lugosi made no secret about his feeling cursed by the role, and that he was unable to be identified by any other character. his tragic struggle with naracotic addiction towards the end of his life is well detailed but so is lugosi's overcoming it. shows courage for a man in his situation.
an extremely well written biography that should not be missed. whether a fan of lugosi, the golden age of hollywood or the classic horror films, you will find this a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for horror fans, 6 Aug 2009
By G. M. Munn (Cape Town, South Africa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Touched by the pathos of Lugosi as portrayed in the movie Ed Wood, I was lucky enough to receive The Immortal Count as gift shortly afterwards. I knew nothing of Bela Lugosi prior to that and read the life story of this proud, creative man with relish.

Arthur Lennig must surely have written the definitive book on Lugosi? It's entertaining, objective and although crowded with substantiated fact, holds a good pace. I'd highly recommend it - not only for Lugosi and horror fans but to anyone interested in acting and the movies.
