Although this book is classified as crime, it's so much more than your run-of-the-mill mystery. Set in China, it brings to life many of the social and cultural complexities of that fascinating country. It also features the two main characters of Lisa See's last book, The Flower Net, which is equally as gripping. Liu Hulan is a well-drawn, fascinating character and you actually care about how her relationship with the American David Stark is going to turn out. I look forward to another book by Lisa See

I feel as though I've been to China, this book comes alive with minute details and background. A charged atmosphere of crime and suspicion. I was unable to put this book down - the sub plots entranced me. Loyalty, family & danger. Its keeps you guessing until the end - not your run-of-the-mill crime thriller. I was a police detective the day I read this book. If only for a few hours, I saw China like a native.

Lisa See has that rare gift of being able to weave a compelling story with Historical fact. I have read all but two of her books and she never dissapoints.She is one of a small group of writers whom I wish would write faster!!
