5.0 out of 5 stars In one word ! EXCELLENT, 16 Sep 2000
This is one of the best magic books i have ever seen, it covers loads and loads of differnet tricks that you really can do at any dinner table. I have been doing magic for a while now and this book showed me a load of tricks i have never seen before. I read the book from cover to cover i couldnt put it down. I not long after was out for dinner with my family and decided to try some out, it was amazing to see the looks on the people faces, and as normal they always ask how do u do it but as a magician knows you only do the trick once in front of one set of people cus once it entertainment and twice is education and you keep your lips closed. best of luck i had loads of fun with this book :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars What are you Looking for?, 1 Sep 2005

This is a good book. However, if you're looking for sleights or more skilled tricks it is not for you. As Schindler himself says in the conclusion, "I have taken all the sleight of hand away". For me this was a minor disappointment, as I am most interested in magic that relies purely on skill rather than props or preparation.

Schindler covers a great many simple illusions that can be easily carried out by almost anyone. A few of them, especially if accompanied by the right patter, can be worked up into impressive tricks. In fact, several may well be familiar to you from the routines of professional magicians. Others will never be anything more than 5 seconds of drunken bemusement.

This is a book that anybody interested in magic can get something out of, but it may be of most use to two types of people: 1) the sort who would like to astonish their friends and inspire the odd giggle, or 2) Those starting out and wanting to develop a wide view of what magic is and how it can be used/performed.

In the latter case, I would recommend not taking this book as an indication of What Magic Is. Buy it in the company of at least one or two others. The Royal Road to Card Magic by Hugard and Braue and Bill Tarr's Now You See It, Now You Don't: Lessons in Sleight of Hand are two that are widely recommended. They will also begin to fill the hole left by Schindler's shunning of sleight of hand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 27 Jan 2006
By Jon Olafur Olafsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) - See all my reviews
I thought this book would be good. Especially since people were rating it highly. But it´s not a good book. It´s just silly tricks, too silly to want to even try them. I´m really having a hard time finding a good book about magic. Maybe they´re all bad? Who knows? It doesn´t deserve one star but it seems you can´t give less.
