In this novel, Vinge returns to the City of Carbuncle; characters memorable from The Snow Queen and World's End are brought to life once more - and what tangled and eventful lives they have! Violence, drug peddling and corruption in many forms flourish unchecked - but certainly not unwatched - by the machiavellian Arianrhoed, Carbuncles Snow Queen and supreme ruler. The rest of the universe has a very limited interest in her backwater planet, and being a Blue - policing Carbuncle as a representative of outside authorities - is a thankless job. For one of Vinge's main characters, Ghundalinu, it almost takes the form of a penance.

There are many violent events in this novel, and many deaths, but the cautious unfolding of friendship and love is to me at least as exciting. Vinge has created a complete and original universe, and a set of characters that certainly managed to hold my attention!
