2.0 out of 5 stars The plot was muddled and the pace was jerky., 11 Oct 1998
By A Customer
When I bought this book, I didn't realize it was part of a series. This is not the book to start with. The book begins with a two-page overview of galactic politics, and proceeds assuming you assimilated all the background information and its implications. I found that far too many characters were introduced in the book to keep track of who was supposed to be on what side with who. The book punctuates itself with oddly anticlimactic crises, with long stretches of almost irrelevant plot-building in between. I finished the book, but cared little about the resolution by the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ecolitan Enigma, 1 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ecolitan Enigma (Hardcover)
I have enjoyed nearly all Modesitt's books, but by far and away the best are the Ecolitan series, and this one is an excellent read. A bit more challenging than the normal sci-fi. Well recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another good story of the Institute, 8 Sep 1998
By A Customer
I will not claim this is a great book, but it was a good read and what I expected as another adventure of the institute. This is more of a mystery/dective style story
