5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, 16 April 2003
By Thomas S. (The Hague, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This book managed to catch my imagination from the very first chapter. I bought this book thinking it was just another fantasy book, but Modesitt's writing had me hooked all the way through. This was the first of the series that I layed my hands on, and it convinced me to buy the whole series and read them from beginning to end.

Modesitts writing style is what makes the Saga of Recluce such a great read, I advise you all to lay your hands on a copy of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars a very well written book!!!, 28 Oct 2000
By A Customer
out of the saga of recluce i personally found this book the best of the lot, it had a very nice mix of action. and the characters are well develloped which helps to make the story interesting. the story starts in a small town in recluse were he lived for most of his life an grew an acute liking for engineering then dorrin leaves to go on a quest type thing called a dangergeld. during which he becomes a smiths apprentice and then makes a lot of money as a healer. once he has returned to recluse he starts up a small city the starts building iorn ships which he uses against the evil wizards.

1.0 out of 5 stars A terrible book!, 20 Aug 2007
I was prompted to write a review of this book from the shock of reading the other reviews. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, do not read these books expecting any fantasy of the standard of Hobb, Martin etc. Here are a few reasons why I disliked the book:

1) It is written in the present tense, which is extremely grating.

2) The author uses sound effects to describe what is happening. It ends up reading like a comic book.

3) The writing is extremely poor and the plot so thin as to be non-existent. I could sum it up in a sentence. The characters are also very thinly-drawn and consists solely of good guys and bad guys.

All in all, if you want to read good fantasy, please go somewhere else.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good solid read
While a bit lengthy at 759 pages, the story keeps you engrossed while letting you take frequent breakes. Dorrin is the central character, the first of the Black engineers. Read more
