4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book "Brian Gaghan", 9 Mar 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stine Babysitter Box (Paperback)
Not his best but close to. This book is okay compared to some of his other books. One thing that is good about this book is in some parts you can feel the terror. The third book in the set is exelent. The first and second are not worth reading. Dont waste your money!

2.0 out of 5 stars almost good.... almost, 16 July 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stine Babysitter Box (Paperback)
R.L. Stine's horror book plots have come somewhat far in the last couple of years. This book defintely wasn't one of his best. If I wanted to read a dull book, I would have chosen the dictionary.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Babysitter, 5 April 2006
Jenny has got a new babysitting job which is great. What's less great is the fact there's a man out there attacking babysitters. But it won't happen to Jenny . . . Then Jenny gets threatening telephone calls. Is it really the man attacking the babysitters or could it perhaps be someone much closer to home?

This book is one of the best R. L. Stine has written. It was written long before he began his production line of writing novels, where each one was formulaic, unimaginative and just plain dull, a quick, unsatisfactory read.

So, 'The Babysitter' won't win awards (R. L. Stine will never win awards for quality writing) but it's satisfactory enough, deep enough to get your teeth into and with enough depth for a teen horror story.

What makes this one so strong is that Stine has chosen a strong plot over cheap chills. Instead of making things too easy and contrived and juvenille the plot has been thought through. Okay the characters aren't fully developed but we can't expect miracles!

Another positive is the fact this book is heavily based in reality, as opposed to the silly 'Hit and Run'. The terror is real and there is a sense that this could actually happen. It's not ludicrous, it's thoughtful and well developed and all the scarier for it.

For what it is this is a very good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the usual type of horror book!!
I love RL Stine and his unusual way of writing horror stories - sometimes baffling you so much that you overlook the obvious answers. Read more
