5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, inexhaustible supply of recipes, 26 Nov 2003
By Dan Sumption "www.sumption.org" (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have many cookbooks, and I love cooking from them, but if there's one that I return to time and time again then it's this one. Partly because I love French food and am largely vegetarian (a fairly uncommon combination), but mostly because there is a huge and varied range of recipes described here, all written with a passion for the food, accompanied by short anecdotes ideas for variations.

True, the author is somewhat keen on her butter and cream, and the jacket photo of her should serve as a warning of what this can do to your figure, but you can freely take liberties with any of the recipes, substituting and reducing quantities as you see fit. And on the occasions when nothing but a complete blow-out on comfort food will do, well then use the whole damn block of butter and tub of cream, your taste-buds will thank you for it.

A cliché but... I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. It's wonderful, and has changed my cooking habits for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is inspiring!, 26 Mar 2002

..I heartily recommend it. Lightly humorous and with vivid descriptions that will make your mouth water, I sometimes reread the recipe comments just for fun. The author is especially insightful about the differences in eating out there vs. eating out in the states when she wonders "does the proximity of dogs make everything taste better?" If you can find this book anywhere, snap it up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Four out of Five
Book arrived in good condition as stated. Four stars instead of five purely because it took 3-4 weeks for it to arrive but I would definitely buy from this seller again.

I bought this book for my wife just before we moved to France 9 years ago; she's still using it, and it's in the stand on the kitchen worktop as I write. Read more
