Product Description

Earlier life forms are buried all over the earth's surface, in oceans, on mountain slopes, in our back gardens. Discovering Fossils provides an essential background on where to search for these fossils, how to scan for the right texture and shapes, and how to properly extract and protect one's finds. With practical advice on what to wear and which tools to carry, expert illustrations for identifying and comparing common fossil finds, and listings of fossil exhibits, clubs, and sites, this complete reference will help collectors of any age discover the thrill of paleontology.

3.0 out of 5 stars This introduction is useful in parts, but mainly in the US., 29 Aug 2001
By entropean (England) - See all my reviews
This introductory text has as its focus the collection of fossils in the United Sates and is therefore less useful to collectors elsewhere. Americans who are new to fossil collecting will find it more useful as it provides what appears to be a comprehensive list of exhibits, shows, clubs, and collecting sites.

Most introductions to subjects are an attempt to provide just the right amount of useful information for the uninitiated. In this case though, Garcia and Miller have tended to provide a lot of common sense advice that is ultimately unfulfilling. They touch upon what the new-comer to fossil hunting wants to know, but fail to be detailed enough to be genuinely useful. Let's face it, it's generalized and covers what you've probably thought of already if you have been looking for fossils.

As an amateur fossil collector in England, the section on fossil identification, with its collection of line drawings of apt examples of fossils, is the most useful 95 pages of this book.

If you live in the States, this text would be worth a look at, but if you are considering buying this and live elsewhere, find a text better suited to your own locality.
