5.0 out of 5 stars the best anthology of zane grey on the market, 14 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Don,t buy it; such a purchase is going to be heavy on your purse. This ecellent selection of hunting and fishing stories expertly edited and commented by George Reiter wil start a costly addiction to Z.G volumes.
The inexpensive collection contains all the quintessential tales and is an irresistable invitation for more.It is well documented by excellent and highly interesting black and white photographs and nicely illustrated by drawings.
This volume is everything such a slightly nostalgic book should be.
Through all the tales we find a plea for the safeguard of the wilderness areas of our world. Grey's dislike of the automobile as the major source of destruction of landscape is evident. He is also highly critical of lumbering, mining and fishing interests of large industrial companies.
This volume has it all, fishing for black bass on the East Coast rivers; steelhead and salmon in the Pacific North West; ploughing the deep blue for billfish; stalking the Everglades for tarpon, bonefish and snook; exploring the deserts of the South west and catching mountain lions in the Grand Canyon. My favourites: " The Bonefish Brigade" with the quaint charm of an O.Henry story and " Don, the Lion Dog " the best dog story after Jack London.
