4.0 out of 5 stars Good practical guide to getting started., 29 April 2002
By erk@hebes.freeserve.co.uk (Winchester, England) - See all my reviews
Fly fishing, unlike other branches of the sport, is something that you cannot start
until you can cast. This book claims to be able to get you started and that's pretty
much what it does.
No introduction, just bang! straight into how to hold and swing a fly rod. It's the
equivalent of the 'quick-start guide' that comes with most computer hardware now
and allows us to get going without having to read the manual.
Casting is a knack and as such it is extremely difficult to communicate to another
but this book uses plenty of illustrations from everyday life in order to convey the
feel of the various actions involved and if you have no one to teach you personally
then this is the next best thing.
It is only designed to get you started and it only deals with the basic overhead cast.
There is a brief mention of the roll cast and no mention at all of more complicated
casting methods such as the spey cast but in terms of getting a straight line on the

water it is just what you need.
There's an after word on conservation which is fitting as this is becoming an in-
creasingly pressing issue for those who enjoy fishing and wish to be able to do so
into the future.
I bought it in order to get a friend started and I will no doubt be coming back for
another copy before long.
