Product Description

Product Description

Operation Varsity was the last major airborne offensive of World War II and remains the largest and most successful drop in history. Conducted primarily by the British 6th Airborne and the American 17th Airborne Divisions, including Canadian elements, the goal of the operation was to cross the Rhine River and gain a foothold in Germany. Drawing on war diaries, unit histories, after-action reports, and interviews with veterans, "The Last Drop" details the horrors of parachuting through flak-filled skies, the dangers of piloting a glider safely to the ground, and the struggles of infantry combat, and shows how thorough training, extensive planning, solid execution, and sheer guts combined to make Operation Varsity a stunning victory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, 25 Sep 2008
By I. R. Manton (Northampton United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The subject of this book interested me which prompted me to buy it. It is a good book but leaves you feeling slightly short changed when you have finished. If you are a fan of big chapters with great detail covering a short time you will probably feel better about this. My main gripe is that this disjoints the book by trying to cover the British and American angles and you then lose the flow of the Operation. Whilst separating the two divisions may have been a reasonable way forward I think the Author could have done with compiling it into shorter time frames. This way it would be easier to keep the overall state of play for Operation in your head better.

I also feel he concentrates to much on the British side of the action and tends to skirt over the Americans.

All in all though a worthwhile book. Maybe I am being a little picky but I think 5 stars should only be given out to books that really stand out and have no faults (see James Holland - Fortress Malta or Bothers in Arms by Peter Duffy for my idea of a 5 star book).
