Product Description

Synopsis

Few creatures are more feared, more talked about, and less known than the great white shark. To learn more about this formidable ocean dweller, the Cousteau team mounted a two-and-a-half year expedition to the south coast of Australia involving some 40 scientists, divers, cameramen, and sailors. This is the story, in words, photographs, and drawings, of the study and all that was learned from it about shark behaviour and biology. Myths and lore about the great white are dispelled, leaving an indelible image of a powerful predator of the seas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A photographic journal of oceans most misunderstood predator, 14 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Cousteau's Great White Shark is a report of two expeditions over a two and a half year period with outstanding photographs to capture the readers imagination and literally place them on board with the crew. The aim of the expedition was to analyse and tag these magnificent animals so that their movement and behavioural patterns could be studied. Whats more, the trials and tribulations both in and above the water are told to the reader in a way that captures their imagination.

The book begins with the common fearsome "Jaws" image as a way of introduction before quickly moving through and banishing many fables within the first chapter. The authors' then move through the various stages of the expedition and unbelievably, one feels that the sharks they encounter have their own personalities and are far from the man-eating reputation that supercedes them. By the end of the book many of the common falacies associated with these animals are no more and the fact that the sharks are facing extinction leaves the reader in no doubt about the dire situation that these animals face.

This truly is a book for all, superb photographs and diary entries which make it all come to life, but most of all, it leaves the reader with a greater understanding of the lonely lord of the sea.
