5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, 2 Nov 2008
By H. Newbery (Somerset, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First things first, I LOVE this book. My Grandad has a copy of the original edition and I remember reading it as a child and being utterly besotted with it.
Although it sounds like a book for children, it actually appeals greatly to adults - it would be equally enchanting whether you're 4 or 94 when you first discover it.
The book itself is a weighty hardback, set out as if it is a factual study of Gnomes and including pages on everything from their historical background and geographic locations to their appearance and physiology. It also goes on to detail the minutiae of the life of the Gnomes - their different types, courtship rituals, housebuilding, hunting, dress etc - absolutely everything is covered, far too much to list here, and all beautifully illustrated by Rien Poortvliet.
The back of the book contains nine 'Legends of the Gnomes', which are short stories, all about two pages long, some Gnome music (complete with scores and words) and an inverview with a Gnome - the 379 year old Tomte Haroldson from Amersfoort, Holland.
The copy I have now is the 30th Anniversary Edition, which appears to contain no changes to the body of the text (something I was actually more than pleased to discover), but has a new Epilogue and several new sketches.
Words can not express how good this book is- how thoughtful and enchanting, how well written and perfectly illustrated. It is astoundingly good and I can't recommend it highly enough.
