Product Description

Jim Henson's fantasy film "The Dark Crystal", featuring the concept design of artist Brian Froud, has developed a big cult following over 25 years. This is a reissue of the work as a collector's edition. It contains all of the art and text of the original volume - plus a new essay by Froud, illustrated with never-before-published paintings, drawings and sculptures from the film's archives. This edition also features a facsimile of a 20-page booklet Froud and Henson created to present the film to backers, which gives an overview of the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars The World of the Dark Crystal, 15 Jul 2003
A lavish and beautifully laid out visual record of the concept art that created the unique world of the film. Innovative use of overlays and foldouts gives this work the feel of a design proposal, or a pitch for the movie. The book only disapoints in that there is nothing here on the making of the film, and the text is written in slightly laboured, archaic style in the vein of the mythology behind the films narrative.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exquisite companion and guide, 15 Jun 2005
Anyone who knows and loves Henson and Froud's "The Dark Crystal" will cherish this book - just as I do!

I first saw the film as a seven year old and have been fascinated, enchanted and irrationally in love with its world and characters ever since.
This book has given me the most amazing insight into the staggering amount of care and attention to detail that allowed them to create such a rich and credible environment.

I'm currently enjoying the experience of watching my daughter discover Jen and his world - somehow, it makes the film all the more special!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and informative book, 19 Jan 2005
By spamitz "spamitz" (Peterborough) - See all my reviews
This book would make a great gift. It is a must for any fan of Brian Froud or fantasy art in general. The illustrations and fascimilie of the original treatment are quite stunning. Perhaps the publication of this book will encourage a reprint of the equally fascinating 'The Making of the Dark Crystal', which focused on the story and the special effects in the film.
