2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing book given the magical story to tell., 26 Jun 2000
By P. Williams "prwwiz" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very disappointing book given the magical and fascinating story that it follows. Firstbrook gives an interesting and detailed description on the history of Everest and previous exepedtions in the beginning, but then the book tails off badly with very little about the actual discovery and detail of the find of Mallory. In fact the actual discovery is detailed in only one small part. Finally, the author presents a rambling, incoherent and unstructured view of whether Mallory & Irvine succeeded in the atttempt and bears no relation to all the further scientific evidence that was uncovered.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable story of courage and heroism, 15 Sep 2003
In 1924 Mallory and Irvine were lost making a summit attempt on Everest. Did they reach the summit and perish on their descent? We'll never know but this book puts forward some very interesting evidence to suggest that maybe they did.
One thing that is not in question is the remarkable bravery and fortitude of these men. This is a very affectionate study, mainly of Mallory who is surely one of the great lost heroes of British exploration.Even for someone, like myself, who has no interest in climbing this is a thoroughly gripping and interesting tale that maintains the attention of the reader mainly due to the great character detail the author invests in his work.
If you're looking for a study of one of the most heroic episodes in 20th Century British history then read this book. Then pass it on to someone else to read, because this is a legend that deserves to be kept alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did They Do It?, 27 Feb 2004
This book is an absolute beauty.
If you've never thought about mountain climbing then you will now.
It was produced in conjunction with the BBC sponsored documentary which sent a team of crack climbers including Conrad Anker back to Everest to look for the bodies of Irvine & Mallory. They only found Mallory's body! If you've ever seen the film you'll know its probably the best historical documentary ever made, but the book gives you a history of Everest from the british imperial days to the chinese expedition which led Conrad & the boys there in 1999.
For any one who cares about history this is a must. I used to think Mallory was a mug, his "Because it's there" quote that of a pompous advernturer, not any more. It was his fate his destiny if you like & there's a monster revelation towards the end. Did they really pull it off? Only one way to find out.
