Product Description

Product Description

Designing Tessellations opens the door for quilters to thousands of new and exciting patterns by showing them how to create tessellations--designs made up of the repeated use of seemingly complex but deceptively simple shapes that interlock perfectly to flow across a quilt. Inspired by artist M. C. Escher, Jinny Beyer introduces quilters to the fascinating world of symmetry and then clearly shows how to experiment with shapes and images to create sensational, tessellating designs. Quilters will not only learn how to produce interlocking geometric patterns, but also will learn how easy it is to create true-to-life images of birds, fish, butterflies, and more in the style of Escher. Features include: - More than 125 color photographs and 2,000 step-by-step color drawings - Dozens of quilts featuring tessellated designs

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, practical guide to designing tessalations, 6 Jan 2000

(REAL NAME)
This book is a must for anyone interested in tessalations and specifically the work of Escher.

It takes you through practical exercises to identify and understand different types of symmetry. It then goes on to explain how Escher achieved his stunning tessalations and how you can do the same.

The book is clear and easy to read. It explains complex ideas simply with the help of many illustrations.

A bonus for quilt lovers like me is the many beautiful quilts that Beyer uses to illustrate the design principles.

I thoroughly recommend it to other readers whether your background is in patchwork and quilting or in other art/design disciplines.

A great book one that should be worked through carefully to get the full benefit from all the wonderful information and ideas shared. At first glance the book can appear too technical but this is not the case the information is clear and helpful. This book is one I know I will return to again and again.A book that has taken some of the mystery out of design work
