Product Description

Synopsis
A biography of the Polish friar, canonized in 1982, who founded the Militia of the Immaculate, wrote numerous periodicals and newspapers, and while imprisoned in Auschwitz, sacrificed his life for another man.

From the Author
Polish Saint who died in place of another in Auschwitz
This book grew out of my interest in saints of the Twentieth Century. In 1995, I flew to Poland where I visited the sites associated with Poland's famous, modern saint and martyr. While in Poland, I stayed at the Franciscan monastery outside Lodz, from which I travelled to St. Maximilian's birthplace in Zdunska Wola, his childhood home in Pabanice, where he had the vision of the Virgin Mary at age ten. At Niepokalanow, the Franciscan Monastery he founded in 1927 outside Warsaw, I saw the museum of his life and work, sat his very own desk, and met several elderly friars who were Kolbe's students in the 1930's. Among them was Fr, George Domanski, the world's authority on St. Maximilian, who examined my book and corrected any innacuracies. Most deeply moving was standing outside the cell in Auschwitz where the saint died after suffering fourteen days without food or water, after offering to take the place of another condemned prisoner. This book will demonstrate to young people the heights of love to which Christians can rise. Here is a true hero for our time, a saint who lived what he preached, total love toward God and man.

5.0 out of 5 stars St. Maximilian Kolbe - an inspiration, 17 Feb 2005
This is a moving account of the life and death of Fr. Maximilian Kolbe, who later became a Saint. Despite his great accomplishments (including starting a Franciscan Order in Japan) Fr. Max remained a humble man, always putting the needs of others before his own. I was heartened to hear that, during her research, the author had met many who had had the privilege of knowing Fr. Max. I envy her.

Until I did some research, I did not realise the full extent of the Nazi hatred during WWII and the holocaust. To my horror I discovered that not only had 6 million Jews perished, but historians estimate a further 5 million gentiles suffered the same fate. These were Gypsies, pacifists, communists, Catholic priests, such as Fr. Kolbe, monks, nuns, Jehovah's Witnesses and Protestant pastors, along with any person with a physical or mental impairment - all fell victim to the Nazi regime. It would seem very few escaped persecution.

Fr. Kolbe was an Auschwitz prisoner who offered his life in place of one of his fellow prisoners. He is one of many heroes of the Holocaust, some of whose stories we may never hear. I am in awe at the selflessness of St. Maximilian Kolbe. What a man - and what an inspiration.
