In 1979-80 I helped launch Fine Homebuilding magazine and sogot to meet hundreds of building tradespeople around the country. Having already renovated three houses of my own, this was an owner-builder's dream assignment--because I got to ask them how they would have handled all the thorny renovation tasks I had encountered. That's how RENOVATION: A COMPLETE GUIDE was born; it took three years to write and revise.

The Library Journal (6/15/97) had this to say about the second edition: "A classic in the first edition, a masterpiece in the second, this work is the last word in renovation--Litchfield is cited again and again by other authors in the field, and rightly so....In nearly 600 pages of text, accompanied by 1000 illustrations, all systems used in the home are covered in detail, and with sensitivity for a nontechnical reader. If you are renovating a home or even thinking about it, this is the place to start."
