5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer on the subject, 21 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Fling and Puterbach take the view that flytying is about imitation. Therefore, what they teach is not how to tie specific patterns of flies, but how to tie imitations, that can be adapted to the materials to hand and the specific insects that the angler sees. Their approach is rather like the difference between buying a book on cooking and a book of recipes. One tells you how to follow instuctions, the other tells you how to do it for yourself. The list of materials, tools and techniques is extensive without being so large as to bog down a novice, and the short primer on the life cycles of the main aquatic insect groups allows a sytematic approach to imitating tyhge insects one sees. The thirty generic fly types that are described in the book have excellent, clear instructions and diagrams, that make following the plans and then applying one's own observations simple. This is without doubt the best primer on the subject I have seen. I recommend it without hesitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent basics of flytying book for beginners and above., 26 April 1997
By A Customer
After little formal training and some flytying kit manuals , I found Fling and Puterbaugh's manual. It was just what I needed to continue in my hobby. The authors' include thorough chapters on tools, work environments and materials. Nothing is assumed in this book. Although the sections on insect life cycles are just a brief overview, the specific patterns shown include excellent step by step drawings to walk even a 9 year old through with ease. This text has become my new fly tying instructor .

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful practical introduction to tying general fly patterns, 8 Jan 2007
By Gonzo (Gloucestershire, UK) - See all my reviews
I'm new to fly tying and I have found this book very useful. Rather than give instructions for tying specific patterns it gives detailed instructions for tying general types of flies - specifically imitations of naturals. Although it does not have colour photos or pictures the illustrations are nevertheless very good and very useful and there are lots of them. Being an American text it does use some USA'isms but there you go - I'm Brit but I'm not fanatical about Queen's English. The text is clear and straightforward - no gratuitous airing of opinions just simple and practical information. There are detailed step by step instructions - with line drawings - for 24 very useful general flies - and the methods and patterns used are simple and practical. All in all a well written, useful book - and very charming too - well done Messrs Fling and Puterbaugh
