Product Description

Synopsis

Whether you dream of building a holiday home or a multigabled manor, here's how to do it yourself, in the most comprehensive guide ever written on constructing log homes. From buying land and drawing floor plans to choosing log styles and joinery, the experts at Popular Science cover every phase of construction in more than 840 exceptional photos and drawings, plus comprehensive how-to instructions. Go through all the planning and preliminaries and take a house tour to see different shapes, sizes, and styles. There's information on choosing and purchasing a site; advice on water, solar exposure, potential hazards, and legal issues; and a discussion of tools and labour. The entire building process unfolds from foundation to house raising to finish work: first logs, walls, second stories, roofing, doors and windows, finishing the interior, decks, porches, balconies, cabinet work, wiring, lighting, and plumbing. And for those who want to start with a kit, there are several sections focusing specifically on that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't burn 'em, build with 'em!, 11 Jun 2004

I started building a log cabin last summer (2003) and I wish I had bought this book first. Although there are many well written and informative books on this subject, this is about the most comprehensive. Luckily by adopting a common sense approach to my building design, I haven't gone too far wrong but this book will take a project from start to finish with no problems other that the usual local legalities. (Note: My local council requires a building warrant if a solid fuel heating source like a fireplace/chimney and/or sanitation is included in the design and/or it is over 30 square metres in floor area) Couple this book with Sewage Solutions (Nick Grant) and Building with Stone (Charles McRaven), you have the perfect recipe for building a durable cabin the size you want that you can live in. Happy building.

3.0 out of 5 stars "When men was men, and logs was logs....", 18 May 2005
By Kendra Taylor "pcfriend" (Surrey) - See all my reviews

Hmm - due for a reprint I think (written in 1990, but 'feels' MUCH older).
If you think this is definitive, then you'd be missing out on a great deal of 'up-to-date' thinking, and failing to incorporate a lot of solutions to 'log-home' problems.
Not one mention of laminated logs - shame - and double shame, because the book's format is very sensible and practical - and quite comprehensive.
Before I started into researching Log-homes, I hadn't realised how MUCH work has been done RECENLY to improve them immesurably.

The author should note that a re-vamp and re-print is now OVERDUE.
