Easy to follow and based on practical experience., 14 Oct 2000
This book is a well written and easy to follow description of the Author's experiences building his own earth sheltered house; Log End Cave. It goes into most aspects of the design and construction of this unique type of house with good explanations of why each design decision was made. The Author made a number of mistakes with the original design of his house and he is very candid about this, pointing out exactly what he did wrong and how you should avoid the problems in the design of your own house. Several houses have been built from his revised design, and one is presented as a case study as proof that it is actually a practical, buildable design and not just raw theory. My only small complaints with it are that it is a little thin on detail in places (plumbing, for example, is barely mentioned), and very little mention is made of alternative methods of underground house construction. If you're planning to build your own underground house, or even just fancy the idea of constructing your own environmentally home and haven't decided on what type to build yet, I would definitely reccomend buying this book.
