Product Description

Synopsis

Take control of your emotions with rational emotive behaviour therapy. Dr. Ellis maintains that most depressive emotions are the result of an unconscious decision to be unhappy - his REBT programme is designed to enable the reader to choose positivity. The fundamental tenet of "Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy" is simple: most emotional misery and psychological disturbances are unnecessary over-reactions and can be significantly reduced. Not only are anxiety, anger and depression unnecessary, they are unethical - because when a person allows his or her self to become emotionally disturbed they are being unfair and unjust...to themselves. Dr. Ellis contends that people create their own feelings and choose to think and feel in self-harming ways. "Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy" offers a key to escape this trap. Given the stresses and strains of modern-day living, the last thing anyone needs are the inhibiting crippling problems they bring on themselves through the ways they think and feel about the world and the people around them. The simple, logical method espoused by REBT is the soundest approach yet devised to acquiring true mental health and happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, powerful book on managing & changing one's attitudes, 14 Jun 1998
By A Customer
Dr. Ellis thinks most people create their own misery by distorted thinking (such as 'I must be perfect'; 'everyone else must be perfect'; and 'the world must be perfect'.) The neat part is that if one has distorted thinking, one can *change* that thinking. A powerful self-help book and one of the few which can be 'life changing'. No hint of 'positive thinking', 'count your blessings', or 'trust in <fill in the blank>. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life, 5 Jul 2005
By A Customer
I found the book very easy to read as it combines deep concepts with humour. Ellis takes us through insights gained working as a pychotherapist for over 50 yrs. Each point is followed by exercises which helped me to see where I was causing myself to overreact and feel extremely anxious or angry. This book has helped me to think more rationally and use my energy in more productive ways.It also deals with irrational fears, embarrassment, procrastination and addictions. I now know what to do when I slip back into my old ways and I know that I am a lot happier and calmer since I read the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using common sense to keep from feeling miserable., 20 Jan 1999
By A Customer
The ABC's of Rational Emotive Therapy are presented in a not so scientific approach that allows for greater comprehension and absorption of the material. It's a common sense approach to dealing with our irrational concepts. The words "Self-Help" actually apply to this book. The ideas learned here will be useful for every life situation for the duration of your life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good advice ... writing style could have been better.
The advice is good enough--one wouldn't go astray following it. However, I found the writing style somewhat cumbersome.
